Benjamin Millepied’s new creation revisits one of ballet’s great classics and projects it into the 21st century. On the music of Prokofiev’s Romeo and Juliet, the choreographer imagines with the L. A. Dance Project a larger-than-life show that freely blends dance, theatre and cinema. Romeo and Juliet become young people in today’s Los Angeles, living in an environment in which the social norms of the day render impossible their love. To celebrate love in all its forms, Millepied blurs the lines of our prejudices by entrusting the roles each night to dancers of different genders and origins, blending cultures – and interpretations – in this timeless tale and projecting the sublime music into new and unsuspected dimensions.
