ASSOCIATE ENSEMBLE & ARTIST
Once again, French music is given place of honour for Anima Eterna Brugge’s final concert of its Dijon season. The 27 numbers of L’Arlesienne were composed to accompany performances of Daudet’s play Lettres de mon moulin. Bizer’s music, animated by a tragically dry yet implacable southern sun, met with such success that the composer quickly whipped up in the following weeks a suite for orchestra. The conductor has chosen to return to the original instrumental music in preparing his own suite, preferring the more crisp and lively crests and colours of the first orchestration for 26 musicians. While Saint-Saëns added " with organ" to the title of his Symphony n° 3, the instrument never appears in the role of soloist, but rather as a new colour added to the orchestral pallet, within a score of formal architecture and imposing mastery.
