HØPE & DANCE

Ballet de l'Opéra de Lyon
presentation

The Lyon Opera Ballet rekindles the magic of Lucinda Childs’s vertiginous classic DANCE, while igniting the first sparks of a new work by Alessandro Sciarroni.

Created in 1979 after a series of silent works, DANCE brings American choreographer Lucinda Childs’s distinctive language of movement into dialogue with a sublime score by Philip Glass. With sweeping, ethereal movements, a penchant for repetition and variation, and ever-shifting trajectories, her choreography embodies a strikingly modern energy, made even more spectacular by its visual collaboration with Sol LeWitt.

For DANCE, the visual artist devised an installation in which a film projected onto a screen becomes a faithful, dizzying reflection of the action unfolding on stage. This same fascination with vertigo runs through much of Alessandro Sciarroni’s work, whether he reimagines traditional dances in The Collection or explores spinning in TURNING_motion sickness—two works performed by the Lyon Opera Ballet, with whom the Italian choreographer has forged a strong artistic relationship.

With this new work, he delves deeper into his long-standing exploration of the power and potential of the group.
