Domenico Mazzocchi : Prima le parole !
in a few words

All the abundance and eloquence of Rome during the Counter-Reformation shines forth in this evening of madrigals, in which music pays homage to the art of oratory.

Virgil, Tasso, Petrarch: it is as a lover of poetry and language that Domenico Mazzochi (1582-1665), brilliant contributor to the development of Italian opera, produced his madrigals. Protégé of a rich patrician family, this dilettante of genius perpetuated the spirit of Caccini and Monteverdi by introducing remarkable innovations of dynamic precision, expression and nuance. The subtlety of vocal equilibrium, required in this repertoire, is heightened by the timbre of flutes, cornett, bassoon and theorbo: an homage to the music of the “spoken word”, and Roman society of the 17th century.
