La Boîte à joujoux
Too rarely opened on stage, Debussy’s Boîte à joujoux unlocks the wonders of its animated objects: a show where the subtlety of shadow-theatre preserves the freedom of child’s play. It was upon the invitation of André Hellé, author and illustrator of children’s books, that Debussy would compose in 1913 his "ballet for marionettes". The composer delivered a score both subtle and stark, founded on themes and characters but not without numerous references to popular nursery rhymes. Between humour and melancholy, this "toy box" encloses an entire animated world that is opened today by the Orchestre Dijon Bourgogne and the Compagnie Atipik, with a touch of fairy magic thanks to the suggestive delicacy of shadow-theatre.
