Saint Matthew Passion

ANNULÉ | L. García Alarcón | Cappella Mediterranea

ENSEMBLE & ARTIST iN RESIDENCE

Written for Good Friday in the year 1727, the Saint Matthew Passion recounts the last days of the Christ as told by the first evangelist. It is liturgical music, but reworked by Bach with the architecture of a sacred opera, in which the composer applies all the theatrical means at his disposal to touch his audience. The suffocating beauty and variety of the arias, the treasures of dramatic intelligence displayed by Bach, the prodigious synthesis of styles and genres into a higher unity, and the unrelenting spiritual elevation that runs through this work make it a stunning and literally edifying experience. With Leonardo García Alarcón’s theatrical sense, and the colours of Cappella Mediterranea, the fervour of the Namur Chamber Choir and a first-rate cast, this is a concert that promises exceptional moments of grace and ascendance.
