100% Stravinsky
Three facets of Stravinsky’s polymorphous art resonate in this programme in which the power of the orchestra and violin virtuosity combine to compose a tableau of legendary Russia.
Composed on a libretto by Fokine based on a popular legend, The Firebird relates, in this “Suite for orchestra” version of 1945, the story of Ivan Tsarevitch and the miraculous bird. Infernal dances, scintillating textures and superb cantilenas succeed one another in this savage and dreamy tale. Entrusted to the virtuosity of Isabelle Faust, the Concerto for violin shines with those of Bartok, Prokofiev or Berg in the firmament of the genre, alternating frensy and poignant nostalgia. A totem of musical modernity, The Rite of Spring unveils a formidable pagan ritual: a revolutionary and “barbarous” score that, at its first performance on 29 May 1913 in Paris, caused a riot.
