Opera as a whole throughout the brilliant 19th century, along with its culture of pleasure, kicks off the Dijon season with this irresistible panoply of arias, in which flamboyance and emotion dance an exhilarating pas de deux.

Whatever the contradictions of the “long 19th century”, between scientific progress and romantic enchantment, it was clearly an age of the European lyric stage. The literary finesse of Massenet, in the exploration of myths and legends; the scholarly and rhythmic vivacity of Bizet, who so fascinated Nietzsche; the effusive melancholy of Donizetti, who gave voice and song to the rocks and trees; the power of verist drama carried to new heights by Mascagni; the passionate universality captured by Puccini in homage to artistic life in La Bohême; the combat of Gounod with the metaphysical grandeur of Faust; the broad tragedy of the peerless Verdian drama … It is the universe itself concentrated on the stage, and as Balzac put it: “What an opera is the head of a man” !
