Leif Ove Andsnes & Bertrand Chamayou

Franz Schubert - György Kurtág
Presentation

A faithful guest of the Dijon Opera, Bertrand Chamayou joins forces this year with Leif Ove Andsnes for a duo of the highest order, dedicated to the boundless imagination of Kurtág and the alchemy of late Schubert.

The word Játékok — meaning “games” or “toys” in Hungarian — was chosen by György Kurtág to designate a vast collection of short pieces, spread across nine volumes, inspired by the spontaneity of children’s play and marked by a spirit of experimentation. Heterogeneous in character, driven by cultural memories or by sheer fantasy, these works formed, over the years, a kind of intimate diary for the composer, as well as a moving testimony to the four-hand piano practice he shared with his wife, Márta Kurtág.

For this recital, Leif Ove Andsnes and Bertrand Chamayou have selected a number of pieces for two or four hands, many of them homages — notably to Schubert, of course. It is to Schubert that the second half of their program is devoted, particularly to his late trilogy of four-hand masterpieces: the Rondo in A major, in which the two pianists trade the principal theme amid charming Intermezzi; the passionate and grand Allegro “Lebensstürme” (“Storms of Life”); and finally, the expansive and illustrious Fantasy in F minor, whose opening melody — imbued with ineffable nostalgia, is arguably one of Schubert’s most beautiful creations.
