Les Harmonies Magnétiques
In his compositional work, Karl Naegelen explores the relationships between closely related timbres, capable of generating acoustic illusions. His recent pieces often result from a study of “twin textures.” Harmonies Magnétiques plays on the unexpected proximity between an ensemble with a history of more than two and a half centuries (the string quartet) and newly invented electronic instruments (cordoniums, long instruments with flat strings poised over resonators that are set into vibration by magnetic fields). The traditional bow enters into dialogue with its electric “aura.” This innovative sextet offers an opportunity to explore vibrant, shifting, living textures: the magnetism of a string excited by an electric field is answered by the magnetism between the sounds and the intervals themselves, in turn producing pulsating beats and evolving textures.
