La Cenerentola

Gioachino Rossini
presentation

Two wicked stepsisters, but no wicked stepmother. No pumpkin, no glass slipper… but a strange philosopher in the role of fairy godmother. This is Cinderella reimagined: a magical musical world of light and shadow, where Perrault meets Marivaux.

With La Cenerentola, Rossini strikes the perfect balance between laughter and emotion. The young lovers and their guardian angel bring the elegance and nobility of opera seria, while the ridiculous stepsisters and their family revel in the comic spirit of opera buffa. Their paths collide in a whirlwind of misunderstandings, with sparks flying at every turn.

Returning to the Dijon Opera after Les Pêcheurs de perles (2025), director Mirabelle Ordinaire explores the interplay between reality and appearances, drawing parallels between Cinderella and Alice, as well as Lewis Carroll’s 1871 sequel, Through the Looking-Glass. After winning over audiences as Poppea and in her recital Moving Songs, Dijon-born mezzo-soprano Marine Chagnon takes on the role of the sensitive Angelina.

Another rising star, the young Italian-Turkish conductor Nil Venditti leads the Orchestre Dijon Bourgogne and the Dijon Opera Choir.
