Rococo Variations

ISTVAN VARDAI - NICOLAS ANDRE

ASSOCIATE ENSEMBLE

Tchaikovsky composed his Variations on a rococo theme in 1877, in homage to the music of the fin de siècle and the style galant  that he so loved. But if musical seduction radiates throughout these eight variations for cello and orchestra, one cannot say that complexity has been in any way sacrificed ! Virtuoso to the point of pyrotechnics, they demand of the performer an absolute mastery of the instrument. To complete this evocation of an era of classic taste, the Dijon Bourgogne Orchestra and its conductor Marc André have chosen the most romantic of the classical composers — or the most classic of the romantics ! Mendelssohn, precocious and talented European spirit before his time, returned from Italy in 1830 with the feeling of having discovered the country that "dispenses happiness". This same joy permeates this light-hearted symphony full of good humour and Halcyon spirit.
