A marvellous exploration of the cello’s wide range of expression, in which all the registers are showcased, Saint-Saëns’ Concerto n°1 unites the three movements in a single musical flow. The eloquence of this stringed instrument, so remarkably close to the human voice, sets the stage for Fauré’s Suite d’orchestre, originally composed for the famous play by Maeterlinck. The splendour of the orchestration and the ever-popular “Sicilienne” dominate this score, which is joined on the programme by Ravel’s Ma Mere l’Oye, a deep and dreamy dive into the troubled enchantments of children’s imagination.
