Requiem(s)

In Requiem(s), the 19 dancers directed by Angelin Preljocaj give flesh and blood to some of the most beautiful pages of religious music: a moving choreographic meditation on life and death.

The new choreography by Angelin Preljocaj is constructed around a musical form that for long in the West has been inexorably tied with death. While not at all involved in funeral liturgy, the dancers of Requiem(s) use this form, in which countless composers have excelled, to deliver a choreographic requiem, where the musical works appear and contrast, with the better half made up of sonic creations featuring a contemporary atmosphere. More introspective than solemn, this new creation explores the feelings of loss, but also the joys of life, juxtaposing the idea of finitude with the exuberance and movement of the body. The piece gives a contemporary analysis of the disappearances that attend our current environmental crisis, but that detects, through death, the resurgence of the miracle of life.
