Michael Spyres & Mathieu Pordoy

Berlioz – Korngold – Strauss – Wagner
presentation

“Best Singer of the Year”: in 2024, both the Oper! Awards and the International Opera Awards unanimously honoured Michael Spyres. Sought after in Mozart, Rossini and Berlioz, the tenor — who also identifies as a baritenor — turns every recital into a musical adventure.

Ten years after an unforgettable Mitridate, Michael Spyres returns to the Dijon Opera alongside Mathieu Pordoy, recently Sabine Devieilhe’s collaborator on stage. Their program embraces Romanticism on both sides of the Rhine and the Alps, bridging Germanic and Latin traditions.

Set to poems by Alois Jeitteles, Beethoven’s An die ferne Geliebte is the first song cycle in history, expressing the pain of separation with touching candour. In Liszt, the “beloved” Marie d’Agoult is transformed into Laure, the poet’s muse: the Three Petrarch Sonnets are filled with operatic lyricism, heightened by the Italian text.

In six melodies, Les Nuits d’été by Berlioz set enchanting soundscapes to the words of Théophile Gautier.
