National Jazz Orchestra
Since its founding in 1986, the National Jazz Orchestra has brought together hundreds of exceptional soloists. For her first program as artistic director of this unique institution, flutist and composer Sylvaine Hélary offers a unique homage to jazz legend Carla Bley, who left us in October 2023..
A pianist, composer, brilliant arranger and conductor, the prolific American artist leaves behind a treasure trove of scores and recordings. Sylvaine Hélary teams up with the inventive saxophonist Rémi Sciuto to offer an almost operatic creation, inspired by cabaret, moving between “hits,” orchestral frescos, gentle or humorous songs, more intimate chamber-like moments, and unbridled rhythms. Performed by 17 soloists, the repertoire highlights Carla Bley’s distinctive sound palette, captivating rhythms, and bold harmonies. This creation embraces all musical cultures, where freedom, imagination, and comic power meet rigor, precision and originality.
