Orchestre National de France

Yutaka Sado, Thibaut Garcia
presentation

Let us penetrate the heart of the Spanish soul for the second concert offered this season by the Orchestre National de France, here under the baton of Japanese conductor Yutaka Sado, accompanied by one of the most remarkable guitarists of his generation, Thibaut  Garcia.

An officer in the Imperial Russian Navy before devoting himself fully to music, Rimsky-Korsakov spent part of his youth in the land of Cervantes. In his Capriccio espagnol, which brought him worldwide fame in 1887, he captured and elevated the very essence of Iberian music. Fifty years later, Joaquín Rodrigo evokes the royal gardens of a country just emerging from civil war in 1939 in his celebrated Concierto de Aranjuez. Blind, the composer dictated to his wife a score rich in colour and intoxicating rhythms.

Accompanied by an excerpt from María Rodrigo’s zarzuela, the program returns to the Romantic era with the now-universal themes from Bizet’s suites L’Arlésienne and Carmen: who better than Bizet to pay tribute to the dances and the light of the Mediterranean?
