Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France
Fifty years after giving the first complete performance of Les Boréades, Rameau’s final opera, which had never before been staged, Sir John Eliot Gardiner juxtaposes this fascinating score with the work of another great master of French music, Debussy.
The overture to Zaïs — perhaps Rameau’s most surprising and impressionistic work — beautifully sets the stage for a selection of Debussy’s melodies, orchestrated and enhanced with interludes by Robin Holloway under the title C’est l’extase. Sung by Austrian soprano Anna Prohaska, Verlaine’s poems, imbued with sensual chromaticism, create an atmosphere conducive to the exalted symbolism developed in the orchestral suite drawn from the opera Pelléas et Mélisande. Lastly, we return to Rameau for the most exquisite dances and an aria from Les Boréades, whose colour palette and modernity reveal a clear dialogue with Debussy at the very heart of the French musical soul.
