presentation

Gustav Mahler’s final completed work, Symphony No. 9 unfolds as a profound and poignant meditation on the human condition. This concert features the Orchestre national de Lyon, whose acclaimed expertise in this repertoire brings Mahler’s extraordinary final symphonic statement to life.

Gustav Mahler’s symphonies are like chapters in a single book—the book of life, and of the composer’s own life in particular. Each embarks on an intense emotional journey, reaching toward the sublime. As the last symphony he completed, the Ninth is no exception: at once serene and rebellious, despairing and profoundly joyful, it embraces all opposites and speaks to our deepest emotions. The score offers, above all, a final farewell to the earth and to nature, in which humanity continually rediscovers its reason for being. An exalted work of post-Romanticism, performed by one of France’s most acclaimed orchestras.
