Concert with commentary: French Youth Orchestra
Concert with commentary · Ages 8 and up
As part of the French Youth Orchestra’s residency at the Dijon Opera, a version specially adapted for younger audiences will be presented, centred on Scheherazade by Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov.
Composed in just a few months in 1888, the symphonic suite Scheherazade is one of the pinnacles of 19th century musical Orientalism. Tied together by the languorous violin solo associated with the main character, the work unfolds in four movements:
The Sea and Sinbad’s Ship, blending epic grandeur with the sparkling magic of the sea;
The Story of Prince Kalender, punctuated by brilliant fanfares;
The Young Prince and the Princess, a pinnacle of lyricism;
The Festival at Baghdad / The Sea / Shipwreck on the Rocks, with swirling motifs and irresistible trance-like energy.
The residency of the French Youth Orchestra is supported by Crédit Agricole Bourgogne-Franche-Comté.
