French Youth Orchestra
With Recto (by the French composer Yan Maresz), the French Youth Orchestra inaugurates a new initiative: a residency offered to a composer centred on one of their symphonic works, which will be performed throughout an entire season. Recto captured the attention of Kristiina Poska through the rhythmic engagement it demands from the orchestra and its inventive orchestration.
Poska also leads the French Youth Orchestra in two contrasting masterpieces of Russian music. Composed in just a few months in 1888, the symphonic suite Scheherazade is one of the pinnacles of 19th century musical Orientalism.
Equally radiant is Shostakovich’s Piano Concerto No. 2, composed in 1957. This joyful three-movement work, compact yet full of irony, is entrusted to the expert hands of Alexandre Tharaud, who delighted Dijon audiences last season with his fascinating transcriptions of Bach and Dukas.
