Ariodante

presentation

Ariodante, one of Handel’s most ambitious creative efforts: William Christie and Les Arts Florissants reveal the eloquence, vitality and irresistible beauty of this baroque masterpiece with the stunning Lea Desandre in the lead role of the betrayed knight.

August 1734: having for years sought to conquer London audiences, Handel faced a considerable challenge when a rival company arrived and began stealing away all his best lyric stars. The composer then created Ariodante, a story of crossed lovers at the heart of medieval Scotland, alternating betrayal, dementia, suicidal blindness and knightly tournaments. To win back the public’s favour, Handel wrote what would be one of his most accomplished operas: vibrantly emotional arias, incredible colours, sumptuous and virtuoso instrumental passages that captivate audiences of the past as they still do today. Visionary historian and painter of the most subtle sentiments, William Christie surrounds himself with young laureates of the Jardin des Vocals, the international academy of Les Arts Florissants, in a staged reading directed by Nicolas Briançon.
